Pre-Production for music video 15/10/12 and 22/10/12

We started the production planing for our music video of "shoot it out" There was a pack of documents blackboard to fill in. We shared out these jobs.
I did:

  • Props list
  • Risk assessment
  • Location Research

22/10.12:

Later we decided to use a second location to film the opening sequence of the video. This was by the road outside college. I researched the location took the photos and did other risk assessment.

Reinterpretation 16/10/12

Today we went out to the same location to film the Reinterpretation. We decided to change the scene to horror genre. We made the scene into horror by cutting it differently and changing the tone of voice and the actor screaming louder to sound scared

The things that went well:

  • Ragan helped William for Editing (William was not good at Mac)
  • Improved footage because camera more stable
  • Finished on time
  • Everyone had a turn at editing
The things that not went well:

  • Ryan was not there
  • A new student needed to catch up.
  • Jump in footage so filled it with still shot.
After editing, we rendered it and export it into DVD. We download a clip of the original scene and put it on DVD. We finished the documentation and  handed in our finishing work.

I thought the project went well because we made a good teamwork than on last week.

Reconstruction "Anchorman" film 15/10/12

For this assignment we had to make two videos:

  • A Reconstruction of a scene from a film, shot by shot as accurately as possible.
  • A reinterpretation of the scene, changing something small to give the scene a different meaning.

At the morning, the group decide pick the film called "Anchorman" Glass Case Of emotion Scene

We had to fill in the pre-production document from blackboard.
We filled in forms for:

  • Resources needed
  • Health and safety
  • Contingency plan
  • Shot list
  • Script
  • Storyboard
  • Costing
  • Production team contact details

George was typing on the mac about What jobs we will take?
Roles:
  • William - the Editing assistant/Cameraman
  • Ryan - Cameraman /Sound
  • George - Actor (bit part)/Sound editing
  • Regan - Director/Editing
  • Harry - Ron Burgundy role and script/Editing
I let Harry to use my laptop to finish his works without wasting efforts to find other Mac and I gave him some good ideas about the risk list. We went outside to find phone box.
Things that went well:

  • Found good location close by for phone box and hub for office scene
  • Harry and George acted well
  • Footage was good

Things that not went well:

  • Rain
  • Camera len's getting wet (Not all the parts of camera)
  • Jacket's zip in shot (Jacket cover to protect the camera from getting wet)
  • Reflection on glass (It was blocking Harry's face)
  • Sound traffic in background (It caused audience or Editor find it a bit hard to hear Harry's speech)

Planning for the video 9/10/12

For our assignment we have to make a music video in our production group. We had a planning meeting to talk about ideas.

We want to use the Alan Ayckboure theatre in York college however there doesn't have to be a stage just a black or white background to match the leaflet Scott said he would ask for permission to use the theatre. We are emailing Fibbers to find out how much it would cost to hire the room for one morning/ afternoon in case we can't use the college theatre.

We know people who are on the music course who can perform the song. These are real musician.
There will be more than one probably and we want two angles at the same time on the band performing. One for long shots and one for close ups. Double the footage more to choose from for the edit. Also panning shots.

Roles:
Dan and Ginny will do the storyboard.
William and Jackie will be cameramen.
Dan will also direct too and Ginny is coordinator.
Two team doing the editing on the 2 lots of footage. William/Jackie and Danny and Ginny work with Naomi the final edit.

Choosing an idea for our music video 8/10/12

Our production group is Danny, Ginnie, Jackie, Naomi and me.
We chose the song "shoot it out" by 10 years for our music video project.
Here is the onginal video of the song.

Analyse of “shoot it out” by 10 years – original video.

Shoot it out by 10 year
The beginning is done in silhouette -they are wearing black clothes to create the silhouette the red background.  The genre is American rock music. The music is fast. The background change between red, white, and blue which are colour of the American flag. The live footage is a collage of fast cut. The effects are come from After Effect because these effects of old film footage in front of the band. The shaky camera is not a man-made, it’s computer-made because this shaky camera is too fast than normal people also it made from After effect. The speed effect is more to use in the scenes because the speed effect follow the music speed.
This bands called 10 years and they are kind of American alternative metal band. They look kind of Goth or Emo. Their Audiences of target are Emo, Goth, Musician, Fans and Metal genes Fans. Their target of ages are about teens to 35 years old.

The all effects that I would to use in Stop motion; colour correction, Mask Tool for making objects to hide from viewers, shaky camera and motion tracking. The Resources plan need Camera, lighting, Green screen, Objects like paper or leaflet, small objects for motion tracking. The location plan would use the college's Alan Ayckbourn Theatre if they agree and outside York of theatre would use as back up.  All total costs are about £20 to £100 or less if we don't use outside York of theatre.

The band at the start gets posted a leaflet and on the leaflet it has a made up record label and when all the band touch it they all get warped/sucked into the "as live" performance music video part.
At the end of the song make it seem the lyrics and the music are ripping the paper universe they are in then it  breaks completely and they come back and the leaflet is ripped up.

Analyse of music video in a day 9/10/12

We analysed the music videos from last week and talked about technical qualities, entertainment value and interpretation. Here is what I thought of the video.

  • Brake:
    •  Reverse footage was put in because they needed to make it longer! The lip sync was off- time. The editing was a bit off beat. The aggression and running fitted the track but was a bit slow for the style. Not enough close ups. I like the part of jump in with reverse because it look more creative. If I'm doing it then I would to make more beat style, more quick shots about fighting and running actions. I would add more scene for lip sync and to make a good ending.
  • Globe alone:
    •  Entertaining but people thought it was random and didn't make any sense. It fitted quite well with the song. The lip synch was pretty good. The pace of the action fit well with the pace of the music. The lip sync should have been more aggressive to match the song. the Location was boring. The camera was wonky. It looked unplanned but it needed to be planned to look random. This was my group's video if I was doing it again I would improve it by Camera movement, angle and bit more focus on Dancers. I would make more shots than 2 shots in the original video. I would improve the colour correction  and find better locations.
  • This will be our year:
    • The lip sync looked creepy and was out of time! The editing was pretty good and the general concept fit the theme of the song. The camera work was good with some interesting shot and they made an effort to find a decent location. It was a fun, jokey concept. It looked a bit like a scene from a movie but if the lip sync was better it would look more like a music video. I would Improve by lip sync, more locations, more scenes for lip sync, more close ups shots.

Music video log *1st and 2nd October 2012*

The music video we made, had a girl with a unicorn hat who did the lip synch. The rest of us danced with things we found in the room like an umbrella, a tripod and a spring. We filmed for half the song and we reversed the film for the second half of the song. I used idiot and classic dance move to make people laugh also to make the music video bit more comedy.  We used the 2 long shots and one of two long shots was about focus a girl with a unicorn hat who did the lip synch with mid shot and other long shot was showing you the girl who was sat on the table and the dancers were behind her with wide shot. Some things were not very good because we didn’t have enough time to film so we made 2 shots. If we going to make another film then we would to take more shots than before and use another location to go filming.  We would use more techniques of camera work.  I think the music video needed to improve for contrast colour, beat style and dancers needed stay in the scene bit longer.

Scott (Tutor) had CDs about 5 to 7 CDs so I chose CD name “1” however Ginny in my group, had other CD name “6”. We decided to take these two CDs for finding out which songs was better or easy for lip-sync. We chose CD, 1 over CD, 6 because the song “Globe alone” with fast and slow speed version from CD, 1 sounded great. Ginny send the song “Globe alone” with slow version into her phone from Mac by Bluetooth however Mac’s Bluetooth failed to connect her phone. So I decided to use my laptop to fix the Bluetooth problem. My laptop connected Ginny’s phone successfully however the loading process seems slow because the song size was 54 MB.  We went to other different classroom for filming so Ginny’s phone speaker was not good enough to make louder also the song was bit too fast for lip-sync. We put the song into editing to make the song a bit slower however Ginny seemed struggled looking for speed effect. So I told her to click-right on the video and then the menu pop up. I point on where the speed effect was and she found Speed effect on it.  We had finishing editing the song so we could start to film.  Ginny told me to do silly thing or dance in the background so I had ideas for dancer moves. I used idiotic moves, famous classic moves, weird moves and comedy moves when I was dancing and I used the an umbrella and a tripod to combine with idiot moves, famous classic moves, weird moves and comedy moves to make music video more comical.  After we finished filming, we imported the videos into Final cut pro X software. I watched Ginny and Danny editing because I wanted to make sure if they needed any help and we finished editing the music video.

Film Noir 2/10/12

This afternoon we made a 1 minute video in film Noir style. At group, I was thinking slowly about idea for a Story.  After that, I helped them to set up for lighting so I put the chairs and bags away to create space for lighting and actors. I was helping to them when they needed for a help for example; I help them for moving the table into the scene also to remove it when the film was finishing. I helped Harry to make a script about the police interrogating a suspect. We couldn’t start to make a film because they changed their mind due to that other group was in the same classroom as ours. So I opened the door for Harry took the lighting into other different classroom. I hold the microphone boom when we started a film. There were bad things about film progress because they were laughing when the actors made a mistake, forgetting his/her lines and made mistake movement. This meant we had to do lots of retakes. The first time video was imported into editing software I think its bit lame because the actors were not good enough to make a great performer. The final video, I think it was much better than first video because the actors and camera work were improved due to that we learned our mistakes. The Black and white effect on the video look went very well. I think we should have spent more time planning and then we would have made less mistakes.

Pioneering Music video’s report for Drowned in Sound By William Horsefield. *Update*

Introduction:
The music video can increase the sale and making more money, to entertain and create a band.  The music video has been around since the 1970’s when Queen brought out Bohemian Rhapsody which was very different to anything people had ever seen. Some of the music videos that I think are notable and innovative are:

Talking Heads, 'Once in a Lifetime' (1980)

This music video use increasing more fans, sales, promotion and it created one of the most memorable clips from three decades' worth of music television successfully. They look like kind of impressionist also iconic genre. They used the green screen to make a different background and create clones too. The camera movement and camera angles look very different techniques when compare to latest music video.  The lead singer moves like a puppet and his movements are perfectly synchronised to the music. In the foreground a clones of him is getting more and more out of sync. The main character is getting sweat from the mad dancing but at the end it cut back to him looking tidy again – “Same as it ever was” this fits the lyric.  David Byrne's choreography in the video was done by the one-hit-wonder Toni Basil ("Mickey") People did not know the band Talking Head until this video got them noticed. So it was a very successful promotional video. I think the music video is very odd but it’s good because it make a great inspiration to filmmakers also the lyric will create memories for audience. The friend says about this music video “I have never hear this song before because nobody talk about it also its weirdest music video ever I watch.”

Johnny Cash, ‘Hurt’

It was a promotional video for the single and also for his 2002 album “American IV: The man comes around”.  The man, 71 year old on time of the filming and he was ill and weak. His wife passed away after the filming. In July 2011, the music video was named one of "The 30 All-Time Best Music Videos" by Time. It uses road signs such as “Museum of Cash” and “House of Cash” to Signpost what the next section of the video will show. It uses imagery of rotting flowers and fruit to show that he and everything he loves is dying. It is a montage of photos to show his life in flashbacks. It matches the on screen image to the lyrics by showing cast sitting in his rocking chair when the lyric mention “sitting in my liar’s chair” It uses sepia tones to show he is getting old. Sepia is present and full colour is the past when he was young.  Camera is quite static when it focuses on cash’s face to bring his age into focus.  It uses actual footage from his past. Then is a shot through train window showing the world rushing past. This is a symbol of his life rushing past.  The friend says about this music video, “This music video was great and makes a good sense to what’s a real meaning of the song”

Thriller - Michael Jackson

The video for Michael Jackson's song "Thriller" is consistently on the top of any "Best notable and innovative Video" list for a reason... It is one of the longest videos to be produced. It cost of almost half a million dollars, it was the most expensive video ever. There are so many iconic features of the video, from Jackson's red and black jacket to the zombified dance moves of the creatures to the ghoulish of Vincent Price's rap and laugh.  The camera used the crate shot, Dolly shot and steadicam. “In short, "Thriller" absolutely belongs on the top of this list. It is easily the most ground-breaking and identifiable video of all time.” ~ Tenacious Peaches. The music video made by John Landis, was filmed in New York and Los Angeles. There were about $800,000 to $1 million dollar production budgets. Jackson had an interview that aired on December 11, 1999, for MTV's 100 Greatest Videos Ever Made.  The music video won 3 out of 6 awards at the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards. "Thriller" won Viewer’s Choice, Best Overall Performance and Best Choreography but lost Best Concept Video, Best Male Video and Video Of The Year.  MTV listed the music video as being the "Greatest Music Video Ever Made" on their list, "MTV: 100 Greatest Music Videos Ever Made" in 1999. In July 2011, the music video was named one of "The 30 All TIME Best Music Videos" by TIME magazine. The friend says about this music video “The Performance and song made me think that music video is the best video”

Queen - bohemian rhapsody

It reached number one in 1991 for five weeks following Mercury's death, eventually becoming the UK's third best selling single of all time. It topped the charts in several other markets as well, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and The Netherlands, later becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time. The poll was voted for by the British public and beat records such as Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" (No.2), Adele's "Someone like You" (No.3), and Oasis' "Don't Look Back in Anger" (No.4). it looks dated now but it's use of split screens, strobes, and multiple and overlaid images was as ground-breaking at all the time

Music videos will be around forever because people nowadays expect the whole deal. They want the mp3, the live show/ the music video/ the merchandise. They want everything they can and expect it to be available because this is the digital age and bands must keep up.
